About the breed

Overall
This breed is usually described as a hardy and sound small dog with an independent nature and the kind of dog that has a knack for getting into mischief. The Shiba Inu is a small breed, in fact Shiba means small in Japanese but the Shiba Inu is really a big dog in a small body. This breed is completely fearless when it encounters any animals what so ever, no matter if their smaller or twice their size. The Shiba Inu is a good natured dog when socialized early and can be described as an all around companion with hunting instincts that make this breed unique and fun to own.

General Appearance
The Shiba Inu is sometimes described as a dog that looks like a miniature Akita. This may be true but the Shiba Inu is definitely its own breed. The Shiba Inu comes in many colors, the most popular being red and black and tan. The Shiba Inu stands from 14 to 16 inches at the withers and weighs about 20-25 lb. This may sound like a small wimpy dog but really the Shiba Inu has a very sturdy structure and usually is a muscular dog. The Shiba Inu is in the non sporting group so it usually resides as a companion in the family today. The Shiba Inu has keen senses and is quick to act on food or any intruding animals. It is also intelligent and wise when it comes to hunting and training. For more in depth information on breed requirements issued by the AKC click here.

Temperament
The Shiba Inu is characterized with an independent nature, boldness and quicksilver agility. This breed is usually aloof towards strangers and likes the company of his or her owner more then that of a new-comer. The Shiba Inu can be a feisty breed if not socialized early with other dogs (preferably other Shiba Inus) and children. Overall a good companion and family dog when brought up right.
